2008 Re-Cap : Inaugural Game
May 4, 2008 saw Prep Rugby in the EPRU Quarterfinals against Christiana RFC. Prep Rugby wore specially made pink jerseys in support of the Kelly Rooney Foundation, which raises money for breast cancer research. The specially made pink jerseys were auctioned off after the game, with the proceeds given to The Kelly Rooney Foundation and Save 2nd Base.
Prep coach Tom Farren, Sr. ’94 and 2008 team captain Mike Farren ’08 lost their mom, Anne, to cancer a few years ago and the proceeds from the day will go to the Kelly Foundation in her memory. Kelly Rooney is the wife of Sean Rooney, a 1980 graduate of The Prep, who passed away on July 11, 2006 after a courageous, four-year battle with breast cancer. She was 43. Beyond the score, Sunday was a great day! Prep Rugby was able to raise in total over $2000!
Several hundred people were in attendance at the field, Prep parents coordinated parent volunteer food and food donated by Tír na Nóg Irish Restaurant, Save 2nd Base had a stand promoting the charity and Sean Rooney was in attendance with his family. It was a great rugby day (Prep won the Quarterfinal match 55 – 17), and a positive experience to see high school boys willing to don pink jerseys in support of a cause which affects us all.
With such great support by the parents, fans, team supporters and Christiana RFC, Prep Rugby and Sean Rooney hope to make this an annual event.
